Spring Fishing Tactics: How to Catch Bass as the Water Warms Up

Introduction

Spring is arguably the best time of year for freshwater fishing. As the ice melts and the sun stays out longer, fish (especially Bass) wake up from their winter lethargy and move into shallow waters to feed and spawn. However, spring weather is unpredictable. One day it’s sunny, the next it’s snowing. To succeed, you need to adapt your strategy. Here are the top tactics for early-season success.

1. Follow the Temperature

Fish are cold-blooded. Their metabolism is dictated by water temperature.

  • Find the Warmest Water: In early spring, look for the northwest corners of lakes. These areas receive the most sunlight throughout the day and are protected from cold north winds. Even a 2-degree difference can attract schools of fish.

  • Slow Down: The water is still cool, so fish aren’t chasing fast prey yet. Slow down your retrieve. If you think you are reeling slowly, go slower.

2. Target the Shallows

As the water warms, baitfish move shallow, and predators follow.

  • Look for cover in shallow water: rocks, wood, and emerging weed beds. Rocks are particularly good because they hold heat from the sun, acting like a radiator for cold fish.

3. Downsize Your Baits

In early spring, the forage (prey) is often smaller. Using a giant lure might scare fish away. Switch to smaller profile lures or finesse jigs. A smaller meal is an easier target for a fish that is still waking up.

4. Be Prepared for Rain

Spring showers bring warm water into the lake, which can activate feeding. Don’t be afraid of a little rain. Often, the best bite happens right before a storm front moves in, as the drop in barometric pressure triggers fish to feed.
